The Tulsa Republican Club Provides Statement on the Greenwood Trust

TULSA (06/13/2025) – On June 1st, Tulsa Mayor Monroe Nichols announced the creation of the Greenwood Trust, a private charitable trust “which would serve as an avenue to encourage economic growth and development in North Tulsa, the historic Greenwood District, and surrounding neighborhoods, with a focus to address disparities experienced by Tulsa Race Massacre survivors, descendants, Historic Greenwood District and North Tulsa residents and businesses.” (City of Tulsa)

In response to this announcement, the Tulsa Republican Club would like to provide perspective on the approach taken by Mayor Nichols.

As Republicans, we believe in the following guiding principles:

  • Fiscal Responsibility: Taxpayers should not be burdened with the financial responsibility of reparations or settlements for historical conflicts, regardless of their intent or merit. Public funds must be carefully managed and prioritized for essential city services that benefit all residents equally.

  • Community-Led Solutions: Social welfare and economic development are most effective when driven by the community itself. Private individuals, businesses, nonprofits, and philanthropic organizations should lead efforts to uplift neighborhoods and address disparities. This model promotes local ownership, innovation, and sustainable impact without expanding government spending.

We commend Mayor Nichols for adopting a conservative approach by establishing the Greenwood Trust as a private charitable entity rather than relying on taxpayer dollars. By encouraging private support and donations, this initiative aligns with the principle that communities are best served when they take charge of their own future through collaboration and voluntary contributions.

The Tulsa Republican Club stands ready to support private sector involvement and community engagement to help revitalize North Tulsa and the historic Greenwood District. We encourage all citizens, businesses, and organizations who share a vision of economic growth and equitable opportunity to participate in this effort.
