Debate Cancellation Announced by Tulsa Republican Club and Women for Tulsa: Lt. Governor Primary Debate Called Off Following Candidate Withdrawals
The Tulsa Republican Club and Women for Tulsa regret to announce the cancellation of the Lt. Governor Republican Primary Debate previously scheduled for Tuesday, March 31, 2026, in Tulsa.
This decision follows the late withdrawal of candidate Cindy Byrd, who notified organizers just three days before the event that she would no longer participate, citing the need to prioritize fundraising over appearances. Shortly thereafter, Senator Darrell Weaver declined to participate, indicating that without Byrd’s participation, he believed the debate would not be a productive use of his time.
The Tulsa Republican Club and Women for Tulsa view these last-minute decisions as deeply disappointing—not only for the organizers, but for the voters who expected and deserved a meaningful opportunity to hear directly from candidates seeking statewide office. The cancellation of a public forum of this importance underscores a troubling trend: the prioritization of fundraising over direct engagement with the people these candidates seek to represent.
Tulsa Republican Club and Woman For Tulsa want to thank Representative Brian Hill for his willingness to take part in open debate, and commend Representative J.J. Humphrey, who honored his commitment to participate despite significant outside pressure to withdraw. His willingness to stand before voters and engage in open dialogue reflects a level of accountability and integrity that should be expected—not avoided—in public service.
While we respect the demands of campaigning, we remain firm in our belief that showing up, answering questions, and facing voters is not optional—it is fundamental. Oklahoma voters deserve candidates who prioritize people over politics and engagement over fundraising.
We also extend our sincere appreciation to Griffin Media. We recognize the value their live-streaming services would have provided in connecting these candidates with voters across Oklahoma. Additionally, we thank Skyler Cooper of KRMG, who not only promoted the debate on air but also generously dedicated his time to assist in its preparation.
The Tulsa Republican Club and Women for Tulsa will continue to advocate for transparency, accountability, and meaningful voter engagement in all future candidate forums.
